Saying ‘Yes’ to a Social Europe
- The Leave campaign claims that Brexit will be a short formality and that talk of economic uncertainty and risk is the use of ‘Project Fear’, a tactic by the Remain camp to sway the British public.
- However, a leave vote will trigger Article 50 of the Treaty of the European Union and a withdrawal agreement will be affected. This is not a deal on the UK’s future trading relationship with the EU or a renegotiation offer but simply about the conditions of departure.
- The recent collapse of the Pound could be just a taste of economic and social uncertainty that could follow.
- It will be vital for the UK to negotiate a new trade agreement with the EU. These negotiations are likely to be long and difficult – Canada took seven years to get an agreement.
- A Leave vote will not solve the many problems the UK faces but we would now simply face them alone. How would we respond to the refugee crisis, or Russia’s actions in Syria, or the rise of nationalism across Europe and the risk of its contagion in the UK?
- The UK has successfully pooled our sovereignty inside of the EU but in our national interest on many occasions. This happens every time we sign a treaty or reach an international accord e.g. World Trade Organisation and the Geneva Convention
