Saying ‘Yes’ to a Social Europe
ERIS Final Position Statement on the UK Referendum:
The referendum debate has been poor. The public demanded a balanced debate on which to base one of the most import choices this country has faced in recent times and instead have been on the receiving end of political twists, turns and shenanigans.
Therefore, it is both inevitable and welcome that the trade unions have joined the growing ranks of economists, historians, university vice-chancellors, academic researchers, business groups, faith leaders, artists and many other public, civic and private sector groups and organisations in the shared belief that the UK should remain as members of the European Union.
Their concerns are genuine. Brexit presents a real and present danger to workers and the ten trade union general secretaries are right in their belief that we should not trust this government if ‘presented with an unrestricted, unchecked opportunity to attack our current working rights.’ Without a doubt, Brexit would create the conditions for a right wing government to position the UK as a de-regulated, low-wage, low-tax economy with minimal working rights, protection and recognition.
Europe needs to change, and we believe it can be done within the European Union working with the European Labour movement. Our aim is to shape a renewed social agenda in a Europe that values investment for the people and expanding our public services.
ERIS, therefore, recommends trade unions to vote ‘Yes’ to remain in Europe in the UK Referendum.
