ERIS Referendum Briefing #3 – Cooperation is the Only Way to Defeat Crime and Terror

Saying ‘Yes’ to a Social Europe

  • Recent tragic events in Paris along with confirmation that seven terror plots have been foiled in the UK in recent months underline how important it is that we maintain and enhance our capacity to defend ourselves.
  • To counter these threats our police and security forces need to be able to act quickly and across borders. Information needs to be shared speedily, arrests have to be coordinated and a prosecution strategy devised. That is why we have to make full use of all available EU police and criminal justice measures.
  • 3,600 international organised crime gangs operating in Europe, with large child abuse networks in existence and the continuing threat of terrorism are all reminders that if we want to stay safe we must have joint working across Europe through providing resources as in Europol (European Police Office), Eurojust (Judicial Cooperation) and the European Criminal Records Information System
  • Britain outside of Europe could not respond with speed and strength to secure the safety of British citizens.
  • Staying in is a hard-headed national security decision.
