ERIS Referendum Briefing #5 – Yes to Europe, Yes to Reform in Europe

Saying ‘Yes’ to a Social Europe

  • The EU is in need of reform. However, our reform agenda is not the same reform agenda as Cameron’s that puts business and corporate interests above the interests of working families.
  • Unions are opposed to austerity and for raising living standards and a growing economy – a Social Europe.
  • We demand a return to the Europe that gave us health and safety protections, maternity and paternity leave, paid holidays, TUPE, equal rights for part-time workers, European works councils etc…
  • None of this will be protected by UKIP and Brexit Tories.
  • We must and will overcome the democratic deficit in the EU with subsidiarity, transparency and accountability to create a democratic framework. The role of the Council of Ministers must be limited and the Commission become responsible to Parliament.
  • Every day the European TUC (ETUC) and our unions, socialist group MEPs and the Workers Group reps in the Economic and Social Committee battle for the interests of working families. For example, the unions have established a ‘Better Regulation Watchdog’ and successfully campaigned to keep social and employment rights on the EU agenda.
  • Reform in Europe will deliver benefits to our economy, jobs and environment.
